Various Ways to Know Hardware Information On Linux

To know the hardware series and core information is an important issues for computer users. By knowing the hardware identity and other informations related to the hardware, users can easily find the most appropriate and suitable drivers for those hardware. The question is how to know details of hardware information on Linux?

This issue has been answered since the first time when Linux grew up. Linux developer has been considering the hardware information as one of the most important issue related for users. Some of tools are developed as the terminal or console line command, while the other one provides useful interface to facilitate this process.

This brief tutorial is written to show you how to know the hardware information on Linux especially using some command line in console and some GUI based tools for mapping the hardware specification. We provides you some examples to help you understanding this focus. Our previous tutorials explained you on how to do the same thing using dmidecode command line.

1. lspci
This command line is the common one to be used to know the hardware specification on Linux. Using this command, the system will reveal some hardware basic info, such as chipset series; USB controller; and PCI.

# ~lspci

2. lshw
Lshw provides more details information of the installed hardware. You need to install this command to be used. 

To install it on Ubuntu, type this command:
sudo apt-get install lshw
for Fedora:
sudo yum install lshw
You can run thic command line, and the system will reveal you the data related to the hardware. See the sample below:

3. lshw-gtk
lshw gtk is a simple tools to check the hardware information through the simple and clear interface. It makes users easily to check the basic info for the installed hardware. To get this tool, you need to install it manually.

For Ubuntu:
sudo apt-get install lshw-gtk
For Fedora:
sudo yum install lshw-gui
Once you installed, you can run this application by running this command for Ubuntu:
gksu lshw-gtk
For Fedora:
lshw-gui
